Although the technology behind the furnace has changed significantly over the years, the basic principle is the same. Oil or gas feeds a flame, which heats a heat exchanger. A blower forces heated air around a chamber and then through the duct work and into your home.

The efficiency of the furnace has improved with features like single and two-stage operations. Two-stage furnace installation use only half of the system’s normal capacity to heat the home. When weather becomes very cold, the system automatically switches to full capacity.
