Famous History of Stockertown
The Stockers, a Swiss family who arrived on the property in the late 18th century, gave its name to Stockertown. In 1845, the post village was known as Stockers Ville and was characterized as a very fertile region. A group of the village’s residents petitioned Northampton County Court to grant the hamlet the status of a borough in late 1900, by which time the community was known as Stockertown.
The Atlantic Portland Cement Company built The Nazareth Works, a cement mill that would later become Hercules Cement. After the bankruptcy of Atlantic Portland Cement, it took on the name Hercules Cement Company in 1916. Through mergers, its ownership has changed frequently; as of 2008, Buzzi Unicem is the current owner.
In 1922, Liberty Hose Fire Company #1 was established, and in 1925, the borough acquired its first firetruck. Liberty Hose decided to erect a monument in memory of the war’s veterans after it was over. The structure afterward served as the borough’s Memorial Hall.
