The state’s Hispanic community grew by 82.6% from 2000 to 2010, which is one of the highest increases in any state’s Hispanic population. The state’s significant increase in Hispanic population can be attributed to immigrants from Puerto Rico (a US territory), but also from other countries like the Dominican Republic, Mexico, Central and South American nations, and the influx of Hispanics who have moved to New York and New Jersey to live in safer and more affordable areas. Nearly 60% of the Asian population increased, thanks to an increase in Indian, Vietnamese and Chinese immigration as well as many New Yorkers who have moved to Philadelphia from Asia. This rapid growth has made Pennsylvania the country’s largest Asian-American community in terms of numerical values. Black and African American populations grew 13%. This was the highest increase amongst state peers (New York and New Jersey, Ohio and Illinois), and it also included Michigan. There were also decreases in White population in 12 other states. This state is home to a large in-migration of Hispanic and black people from nearby states. The majority of these increases were seen in the eastern and southern parts of the state.
Pennsylvania has one of the fastest-growing and largest Puerto Rican communities in the country, making it the home of most Hispanics. The majority of remaining Hispanics are Mexicans and Dominicans. The majority of Hispanics live in Philadelphia, Lehigh Valley, and South Central Pennsylvania. In Pennsylvania, the reported Hispanic population has increased significantly in recent years, particularly among the Black race. The Hispanic population in Pennsylvania is highest in Bethlehem and Reading, Lancaster, York, York, and surrounding areas of Philadelphia. It is unclear how much of this increase in Hispanic population is due to a changing population or how much it is due to an increased willingness and ability to identify as a minority. It is estimated that approximately 85% of Pennsylvania’s Hispanics live within 150 miles (240 km) of Philadelphia. About 20% of them live in the city.
The majority of the black residents are African Americans, descendants of African slaves who were brought to the US from Africa during colonial times. A growing number of blacks are of West Indian, recent African and Hispanic descent. The majority of blacks reside in South Central Pennsylvania, Pittsburgh and the Philadelphia area. The majority of Pennsylvania is made up of whites. They are mostly descendants from English, German, Irish and Scottish immigrants. The Amish community in South Central Pennsylvania’s rural areas is a national treasure. The Wyoming Valley, which includes Scranton, Wilkes-Barre and Wilkes-Barre has the highest proportion of white residents (with a population greater than 500,000) in the United States. 96.2% claim to be white without any Hispanic heritage.
Pennsylvania’s center of population is found in Perry County in the borough Duncannon.
