This state is one the Thirteen original founding States of the United States. It was created in 1681 by a royal land grant to William Penn (the son of the state’s namesake). A portion of Pennsylvania, along the Delaware River, was previously known as the Colony Of New Sweden.
It was the second state that ratified the United States Constitution on December 12, 1787. Philadelphia is the largest city in the state.
Independence Hall is where the United States Declaration of Independence was drafted. The Battle of Gettysburg, which was fought during the American Civil War in the southern central region of the state, took place during that time.
